When asked to imagine a book cover for one of the oscar-nominated movies of that year, I watched the movie "Minari" and felt a huge connection to it. I was moved by the depiction of the Asian American immigrant experience. In this design, I wanted to depict the conflicts that arise for the family in the movie.
The cover portrays the father's struggle to balance his ambition, as represented by the pipes to bring water for his farm, and his family, as represented by the shape of a heart, which alludes to his son's health problems. I also wanted to include the minari plant itself, as well as the snake which appears in the movie.
